Pivoting Private Information Enclave (PIE) for Skcript S1
Artificial Intelligence

We believe Skcript S1 EDGE will be the future of smartsheets where we put AI in every cell. S1 EDGE has quickly become the best Document Data Extraction (DDE) tool for many businesses. This is a big step towards businesses processing millions of documents not in months, but in days assisted by AI.

When we started whiteboarding S1 EDGE, we started out with what’s core to Skcript – data privacy. S1 EDGE is built on this core essential feature, and this called for the development of what we now call Private Information Enclave (PIE).

What is Private Information Enclave (PIE)?

PIE (Private Information Enclave) is a secure data processing framework that creates islands of data in protected environment called enclaves. These enclaves are then used to process sensitive information from documents to ensure no third-party services can build a profile of you or your information or train on it.

PIE is built on top of Skcript’s own data enclave framework, which has been in development since 2023.

How long does data stay in PIE?

PIE is not designed to store data for longer than the purpose of processing the data. Each PIE enclave deletes itself after the data is processed.

What is the future of PIE?

As of publishing this article, PIE is in active development and is being tested with a few customers. We believe PIE will be the future of sensitive data processing across Skcript’s products, and not just S1 EDGE.

Here’s a quick look at where we want to go with PIE:

  • Stateless Compute: Build a dedicated compute environment for PIE to be a headless and stateless service that can be deployed on any cloud provider.

  • Peek Access: Build a way for you to inspect how your data is being processed within PIE and what is being sent to third-party services.

  • API Access: We want every product that processes sensitive data to have an API access to PIE. Eventually, we believe PIE will be the backbone of many products at Skcript and beyond.

This is an extraordinary step towards our goal of building AI that is private, secure, and compliant for all our customers. PIE is a generational leap towards sensitive data processing and we are excited to see what the future holds.

Where did the inspiration for PIE come from?

Your data. Since our inception in 2013, we have been known for building technology-enabled products for large-scale enterprises. Designed solutions around data privacy is what we naturally gravitate towards and this has been a big USP for us.

Above all, down the line, we want to move towards where Apple’s Private Cloud Compute is doing today for customers. Where you can inspect how data is being processed without sending it to Apple’s servers.

Note: PIE is in active development and is not available for all S1 EDGE customers.
